Level Tool · Updated 3 November 2026
How do I level an RV or camper with my phone?
You can use an iPhone as a rough pitch and roll check while you level an RV, then follow the manufacturer's procedure for blocks, jacks, or stabilizers. The phone's sensors are approximate. Do not use it as the only instrument for a setup that affects safety.
What to do
Level enough for a refrigerator and a good night is a different job from a measurement someone could get hurt by. The phone helps you see which corner is low. The RV's instructions say what to do about it.
- Park, then read the maker's steps Chock the wheels the way the manual says before you lift anything. Know whether your RV wants you to level side to side first, which is common, and which jacks are safe to use.
- Put the phone on a hard, flat surface inside A floor that is meant to be level, or a counter you have checked, not a cushion or a sloped dashboard. In Level Tool, or in Measure's Level, read the angle front to back and side to side. Remove a thick case.
- Adjust, then read it again Change blocks or jacks a little, then look at the phone again. Chase the low side. 'Close' is the honest target. A phone will not repeat a tenth of a degree every time you pick it up.
- Zero it only against something you trust If you have a bubble level, set the phone beside it and zero the app so later readings are relative to that. Zeroing on a floor you merely hope is level hides the error.
What not to do
- Do not crawl under an RV supported only by a jack or by a guess from an app.
- Do not use the phone to decide a hitch, a roof, or a slide is safe.
- Do not ignore the refrigerator's own leveling limits and trust the app instead. The appliance maker's range is the one that counts.
Where Level Tool helps
Level Tool shows the angle while you adjust, which is the part a pocket clinometer is for. It does not know your RV's jack points. Those are in the manual, not in the app. View Level Tool on the App Store
Other ways
A bubble level made for RVs
Stick-on levels and a carpenter's level are still the straightforward tools. Use the phone when you do not have them, and check the phone against them when you do.
The Measure app
The built-in level does the same rough check if you do not want another app. Apple says it is approximate.
Questions people ask
What number is 'level enough'?
Close to zero on a hard floor, rechecked after each adjustment. There is no universal tenth-of-a-degree target we can honestly give for every RV. Use the range your refrigerator and your manual call for.
The reading changes when I slide the phone.
Floors are not perfectly flat. Pick one spot and use that spot every time, or the numbers are not comparable.
Can I level a trailer on the hitch with the phone?
You can glance at the angle. The hitch, the jack, and the chocks have to be used the way the trailer maker says. The phone does not make that safe by itself.
Does a newer iPhone read better?
It might. It is still an approximate sensor. Check it on a known level surface before you trust a particular phone.
