How do I back up iPhone contacts without iCloud?

You can back up iPhone contacts without iCloud by exporting a list as a vCard from the Contacts app and keeping that file somewhere you control. Contacts in Gmail, Exchange, or another account are separate lists, so exporting one list does not copy the others.

What to do

iOS already exports contacts. A backup app is useful when you want that export and a restore in one place, not because the phone is incapable of making a file.

  1. See which accounts you actually have Open Contacts and tap Lists. You may see iCloud, Gmail, a work account, and On My iPhone. Each one is its own copy of people.
  2. Export a list Touch and hold the list, tap Export, choose the fields you want, and send or save the .vcf file. Apple documents this in the Contacts guide. Repeat for every list you care about.
  3. Put the file somewhere that is not only this phone AirDrop it to a computer, save it in Files in a location you can reach later, or email it to yourself. A file that exists only on the phone you are about to erase is not a backup.
  4. Check the file before you wipe anything Open the vCard or import it on another device and confirm the names you expected are there. Missing people are usually in a list you did not export.

What not to do

  • Do not assume iCloud is off just because you do not pay for storage. Look at Settings, your name, iCloud, and see whether Contacts is on.
  • Do not email your whole address book to a stranger, including an app's support address, unless you mean to. The file contains other people's numbers.
  • Do not delete the only copy until you have opened the file and seen the contacts.

Where Backup Contact Plus helps

Backup Contact Plus is a dedicated export and restore for people who do not want to depend on iCloud. It uses the Contacts permission on the device. Under its privacy policy, Aivana does not receive the file. View Backup Contact Plus on the App Store

Other ways

The Contacts app itself

Export from Lists, as Apple describes. That is a real vCard backup. You do not need another app for a one-time copy.

iCloud.com, if you do use iCloud

Signed-in Contacts on iCloud.com can export a vCard of all contacts in that account. That path uses iCloud, which this guide is for people avoiding.

Questions people ask

Is a vCard the same as a VCF file?

Yes. VCF is the file extension for a vCard. One file can hold one person or a whole list.

Will this include photos and birthdays?

Only the fields you include when you export. Check the export options, then open the file and look.

My work contacts disappeared from the file.

They are probably in an Exchange or Google list you did not export. Go back to Lists and export that one too.

Does turning off iCloud delete contacts?

It can remove the iCloud copy from the phone, depending on what you choose when you turn it off. Export first if you are unsure.
