# Why does my speaker sound muffled after getting wet?

A muffled iPhone speaker after a splash is often water still sitting in the grille, and it can clear as the phone dries. If it is still muffled after about a day in a dry place, the speaker may be damaged, and no tone will repair it.

## What to do

Muffled does not always mean broken. Water in the mesh blocks the sound until it leaves. The way to tell the difference is time, not a louder app.

1. **Confirm it was liquid.** A case full of pocket lint can muffle a speaker too. If the phone was rained on, dropped in water, or used in a steamy room, treat it as wet.
2. **Do not charge it with a cable while it is wet.** Follow Apple's drying steps: connector down, lint-free cloth, airflow, no heat, no rice. Allow at least five hours before a wired charge.
3. **Listen again after it has had hours to dry.** Play a voice memo or a song at a normal volume. If the grille is merely wet, the sound often opens up as it dries. A short low tone can help drops that are still in the mesh.
4. **Compare both speakers if your model has two.** The earpiece and the bottom speaker can dry at different rates. A tone plays through the speakers the phone uses for media. It does not service a speaker that has failed.

## What not to do

- Do not keep replaying a loud tone all afternoon. If the mesh is the problem, drying finishes the job. If the speaker is damaged, volume makes it worse.
- Do not stick anything into the grille holes to 'clear' them.
- Do not put the phone in rice.

After a day of drying, a speaker that is still quiet, crackling, or silent needs service. Liquid damage is not covered by the limited warranty.

## Where Speaker Cleaner helps

Speaker Cleaner can help when the cause is water or dust in the grille. It cannot rebuild a speaker that liquid has damaged.

## Other ways

### Waiting

Evaporation is the actual fix for water in a mesh. A tone is only a nudge for drops that will come out.

### Apple or a repair shop

Use this when sound is still wrong after the phone is dry, or when the phone will not charge.

## Questions

### It sounds like it is underwater. Is that normal?

For a while, yes, if water is in the grille. It should improve as it dries. It should not stay that way the next day.

### The liquid alert is on, but the speaker is the problem I care about.

The alert is about the connector. Let the port dry before you plug in a cable. The speaker can be dried at the same time. One does not fix the other.

### Will a case trap the water?

A tight case can. Take it off while the phone dries so air can reach the grille and the port.

### Dust makes the same muffled sound. What then?

A tone may shake loose dust in the grille. If makeup, sand, or lint is packed in, gently brushing the outside of the mesh and then a tone is as far as an app should go. Do not open the phone.
